PETALING JAYA (Sept 18): Sime Darby Property Bhd, in partnership with innovation platform Kolaxus, is targeting more than 1,000 university students nationwide for a hackathon focused on developing solutions for sustainable and liveable townships.
In a statement, the property developer said the Sime Darby Property University Hackathon 2026, which runs from September to December, seeks to engage students from public and private universities across Malaysia. Participants will work on sustainability challenges with guidance from industry experts and mentors, with proposed solutions expected to combine community-based approaches with technology, data or artificial intelligence (AI).
The hackathon carries a total prize pool of RM14,000. The champion will receive RM6,000, while the first and second runners-up will receive RM3,000 and RM1,500 respectively. RM500 will be awarded for each placing from fourth to 10th.
Selected winners may also be considered for Sime Darby Property's internship programmes, while selected ideas may be taken forward for further exploration and potential proof-of-concept development beyond the competition.
The hackathon centres on two areas — People and Planet. The People category focuses on ideas to improve health and wellbeing, safety and community connections, while the Planet category seeks practical approaches to sustainable living and environmental regeneration.
The programme will culminate in a grand finale on Nov 14, with the top five teams subsequently pitching their ideas at Sime Darby Property's Innovation Day in December, when the winners will be announced. Sime Darby Property said the hackathon is intended to give students an opportunity to contribute ideas addressing real-world township challenges.
