LAOAG CITY — The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) is assessing sites for five proposed small reservoir irrigation projects (SRIPs) in Ilocos Norte as it seeks to expand water access for farmers and boost agricultural production in the northern province.
NIA Senior Deputy Administrator Robert C. Suguitan led officials and technical personnel in inspecting the proposed sites, including the planned Paoay Lake Irrigation Project, to determine their suitability for development. The team also visited completed irrigation facilities in various parts of Ilocos Norte to assess their implementation, operation and condition and draw lessons for the proposed projects.
Mr. Suguitan, joined by NIA Region 1 Manager Geffrey B. Catulin, Ilocos Norte Irrigation Management Office Division Manager Joselito C. de Vera, and officials from NIA central and regional offices, focused on the technical requirements and site conditions of the proposed SRIPs, which are intended to provide more reliable water supply to farming areas that remain in need of irrigation support.
Mr. Catulin said the assessment would guide the planning and development of additional irrigation infrastructure in Ilocos Norte, particularly in areas with potential to benefit from small reservoir systems. He said these projects are expected to help improve farm productivity, strengthen water security and support the livelihoods of farming communities in Ilocos Norte.
