Las Piñas LRT-1 station construction to take three years, says LRTA

The Philippine Department of Transportation expects a three-year construction timeline for the Las Piñas station of the LRT-1 Cavite Extension. The timeline includes demolition, acquisition, design and construction, with the property donation from the Villar group expected to be finalised this month

The Department of Transportation (DoTr) has said it expects a three-year construction timeline for the Las Piñas station of the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) Cavite extension. Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) Administrator Hernando T. Cabrera said: “Once we have the formal permit to enter, we will proceed with the demolition. Based on our estimate, it will take three years including demolition, acquisition, design and the actual construction of the station.”

The DoTr has said that major right-of-way issues along the rail line’s alignment have been resolved, allowing the construction of LRT-1 Cavite Extension to move forward. It expects to sign a memorandum of agreement with the Villar group this month regarding its donation of a property that will be part of the extension.

Mr Cabrera said: “We just had a meeting with senior officials of the Villar group. They are just waiting for the formal release of the property. We are confident that it will be released within September.” Once the agreement is finalised, demolition will start and the property will be turned over to the private concessionaire, Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC). “We are expediting all of these so that we can expedite the timeline of the project,” Mr Cabrera said.

Earlier this year, President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. directed the DoTr to ensure the LRT-1 Cavite Extension is completed by 2028. LRMC, the LRT-1 operator, opened Phase 1 of the Cavite Extension in 2024, adding five stations to the rail line. The first phase extended the line by 6.2 kilometres, linking Baclaran Station in Pasay City to Dr. Santos Station in Parañaque City.

Phases 2 and 3 of the extension will serve parts of Cavite, and include the Las Piñas, Zapote and Niog stations.
