77-year-old woman dies after fire at Bukit Panjang HDB flat on Pending Road
A 77-year-old woman died after a fire broke out at a sixth-floor HDB flat at Block 126 Pending Road, Bukit Panjang, on 28 Sep 2026. The Singapore Civil Defence Force extinguished the fire and evacuated about 70 people; a 62-year-old man was taken conscious to hospital.
SINGAPORE: A 77-year-old woman has died after a fire broke out at a Housing and Development Board flat in Bukit Panjang on Monday (28 Sep). She was among two people taken to hospital following the fire at a sixth-floor unit at Block 126 Pending Road.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire at about 3pm. Black smoke was coming from the unit when firefighters arrived. The fire, which involved items in the living room, was extinguished using one water jet.
During the firefighting operation, firefighters found an unconscious person in the living room and brought that person out of the flat, SCDF said in a Facebook post. An SCDF paramedic and emergency medical technicians performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation before the person was taken to Woodlands Hospital.
Police confirmed that the 77-year-old woman was taken unconscious to hospital and subsequently died. A 62-year-old man was taken conscious to hospital. Another person from a neighbouring unit was assessed for smoke inhalation and taken to Singapore General Hospital. About 70 people were evacuated from the affected block as a precaution.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. SCDF noted that the top three causes of fires in residential premises are unattended cooking, electrical fires and unattended lighted materials. It advised residents not to leave cooking unattended, to keep stovetops and cooker hoods clean, and to avoid overloading power sockets or charging devices overnight without supervision. Lighted materials such as incense sticks and cigarettes should be fully extinguished before disposal.
The incident is the latest in a spate of fatal residential fires since late July. On 28 Jul, a 70-year-old man died after a fire at Block 39 Circuit Road. Three days later, a person died in a fire at Block 309 Clementi Avenue 4 that also injured two firefighters. On 5 Aug, an 88-year-old man died two days after a fire at Block 684 Race Course Road, while a 67-year-old man died after a fire in a Jurong East flat on 16 Aug. Earlier this month, a 68-year-old man died after a fire at Lorong Lew Lian on 1 Sep.
