MGEN and VITRO to study renewable-powered data centre development in Philippines

MERALCO PowerGen Corp. (MGEN) and VITRO REIT, Inc. have signed an MoU to jointly study data centre developments integrated with renewable energy and power generation. MGEN will identify potential sites and power arrangements, while VITRO will lead design and hyperscaler engagement.

MANILA — MERALCO PowerGen Corp. (MGEN) and VITRO REIT, Inc. have agreed to study the development of data centres integrated with renewable energy (RE) and power generation facilities, the companies announced on Wednesday.

Under a memorandum of understanding (MoU), MGEN and VITRO will conduct a joint feasibility study covering potential sites, power generation capacity, RE resources, connectivity requirements, data centre specifications, and commercial structures. MGEN will identify potential sites for data centre developments integrated with power generation facilities and evaluate possible power supply arrangements. VITRO will lead data centre design and site studies, connectivity planning, and engagement with prospective hyperscalers and other locators.

“Power is increasingly becoming a critical factor in where and how data centres are developed. By bringing together our respective capabilities, we can explore solutions on how reliable, cost-competitive, and sustainable power can be integrated into the development of digital infrastructure,” MGEN President and Chief Executive Officer Emmanuel V. Rubio said.

“Improving the cost and reliability of power is one of the key objectives of this collaboration, as energy remains a decisive factor in attracting hyperscale and AI (artificial intelligence) investments to the country,” VITRO President and Chief Executive Officer Victor S. Genuino said.

VITRO is the data centre arm of ePLDT, Inc. within the PLDT Group. It operates 11 data centres nationwide with a combined capacity of nearly 100 megawatts (MW), and is preparing for an initial public offering by the fourth quarter of this year, initially covering eight stabilised data centres.

MGEN is the power generation arm of Manila Electric Co. As of July 2026, it had a total net saleable capacity of 5,069.7 MW from conventional and renewable sources, as well as 56.4 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery energy storage capacity.
