PETALING JAYA (Nov 4): Google plans to invest US$15 billion (about RM61 billion) in Malaysia in 2027 and 2028, expanding its operational data centre campus at Elmina Business Park and adding three sites in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan. The investment also covers clean energy, water infrastructure and workforce training.
Alphabet and Google president and chief investment officer Ruth Porat announced the investment on Wednesday (Nov 4) at the Mantap Malaysia Bersama AI event, attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Bernama reported. The commitment follows Google’s US$2 billion investment announced in 2024 for its first Malaysian data centre and a Google Cloud region at Sime Darby Property Bhd’s Elmina Business Park in Sungai Buloh. Google confirmed that the Elmina data centre is now operational.
The new campuses are planned for EcoWorld’s Eco Business Park in Puncak Alam and UMW High Value Manufacturing Park in Serendah, both in Selangor, and Springhill Industrial Park in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, Sinar Harian reported. Google has yet to announce opening dates for the three campuses or disclose how it will allocate the investment across the sites.
Google Asia-Pacific global infrastructure principal Ken Siah said the Puncak Alam and Serendah sites would complement Elmina and give Google the option of shifting services between the three Selangor campuses if one site experienced a disruption. The Selangor infrastructure will anchor Google Cloud’s planned Malaysian region, which will serve businesses and public institutions.
Google said it plans to work with Tenaga Nasional Bhd and renewable energy developers to add more than 1GW of clean energy capacity to the national grid under the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme. The company said it would pay for all electricity its campuses consume and cover the direct infrastructure costs of connecting them to the grid.
In Negeri Sembilan, Google separately announced US$160 million (about RM651 million) in funding for an off-river storage reservoir and a water treatment plant. It appointed Gamuda Bhd to build the facilities in coordination with the state government and Syarikat Air Negeri Sembilan Sdn Bhd. The plant is designed to produce 65 million litres of treated water a day once operational, supplying local communities as well as Google’s planned Port Dickson campus.
Porat said the construction phase was projected to contribute an average of US$1.1 billion a year to Malaysia’s gross domestic product and support more than 37,000 local jobs annually, including about 6,000 in construction. Once operational, the facilities are projected to sustain more than 9,000 local jobs annually, including roles in mechanical and electrical engineering, data centre operations, logistics and security, Bernama reported. Google is already working with more than 80 Malaysian entities across construction, civil engineering, network infrastructure, power and cooling systems, logistics and other services, Porat said.
