PETALING JAYA (Oct 16): Genting Property Sdn Bhd has entered into a master-planning agreement with Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd to support planning for Johor Tech Smart City (JTSC), including a flagship 430-acre smart campus within the planned 2,300-acre development in Kulai, Johor.

Unveiled in June, JTSC has an estimated gross development value (GDV) of RM80 billion for the overall integrated development within the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). Genting Plantations Bhd, whose property arm is Genting Property, previously told shareholders that the wider project was expected to be developed over approximately 20 years or more. According to the minutes of its June 9 annual general meeting, phases would be launched progressively based on market demand and project performance.

According to a press statement issued on Thursday (Oct 15), Huawei will contribute its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and smart campus expertise to JTSC's foundational design, drawing on its campus developments in Shanghai and Dongguan, China. Huawei's involvement was outlined at JTSC's June unveiling, when plans included a 430-acre innovation hub based on its blueprint, integrating residential, recreational and wellness-oriented components. The latest agreement formalises its support for master planning.

The wider project comprises a 500-acre AgTech Campus and a 1,700-acre Knowledge AI Campus, with the flagship smart campus situated within the latter. A solar farm is also planned to support the development's energy needs.

Huawei Malaysia Enterprise Business Group deputy CEO Du Xianjun said the blueprint had previously been used exclusively for Huawei's own smart campuses in China. The planned campus was intended to attract technology companies and enable businesses to expand advanced manufacturing and production activities on site, Chinese-language daily Oriental Daily reported, citing Du. He also identified knowledge sharing and stronger local industry capabilities as intended benefits.

Genting Plantations CEO and executive director Datuk Lim Keong Hui said the partnership was aimed at developing local talent and attracting investment. Beyond JTSC, the collaboration is intended to support digital transformation across Genting Plantations' operations, including agricultural technology, sustainable energy management and corporate infrastructure.

The master-planning agreement was signed at the Shenzhen Longgang International Art Centre in China during Huawei's "Cloud-Powered Infrastructure — A New Digital Ecosystem" event.
