Battersea Power Station marks 50 millionth visitor milestone as next phase takes shape
Battersea Power Station in London has welcomed its 50 millionth visitor less than four years after opening. The Malaysian-owned development is preparing for its next phase, with a planning application submitted to deliver up to 3.2 million sq ft of residential, commercial, cultural and leisure space
Battersea Power Station in London has welcomed its 50 millionth visitor less than four years after the Grade II* listed landmark opened to the public, as the 42-acre riverside development moves into its next phase. The milestone comes as more than 20 new retail, dining and leisure brands are expected to open at the development by the end of 2026, according to a media release issued by S P Setia Bhd.
Battersea Power Station opened its doors to the public on 14 Oct 2022, following the restoration of the former coal-fired power station, which had stood empty for nearly four decades. Among the recent additions is Apple Music Hall, a 600-capacity live music venue within Battersea Power Station, which Apple announced on 21 Sept. New brands expected to open by the end of 2026 include The Hero’s Return, Mango Man, Noodle Inn, Konjiki and Virgin Atlantic Holidays.
The development is also preparing for its next phase, with a planning application submitted to revise the original masterplan for the remaining 16 acres of undeveloped brownfield land. Under the proposals submitted, the remaining land could deliver up to 3.2 million sq ft of residential, commercial, cultural and leisure space.
The wider Battersea Power Station development is owned by a Malaysian consortium comprising S P Setia and Sime Darby Property Bhd, with 40 per cent each, and the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), which holds the remaining 20 per cent. The commercial assets within the Power Station building are separately owned through a joint venture between Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) and EPF, with stakes of 65 per cent and 35 per cent respectively. The joint venture acquired the assets for £1.583 billion under an ownership reorganisation completed in 2019.
Battersea Power Station was acquired by its current Malaysian shareholders in 2012 and has since undergone a major regeneration programme encompassing homes, offices, retail, dining, leisure and public spaces. The Power Station building formed Phase 2 of the wider redevelopment. To mark the 50 millionth visitor milestone, Battersea Power Station said visitors on Thursday (1 Oct) will have a chance to win prizes from participating brands at the development.
