PETALING JAYA (Oct 30): YTL Construction has announced three industry award wins recognising the company, its executive director Yeoh Keong Yuan and the RM8.9 billion Gemas–Johor Bahru Electrified Double Track Project.

The project, undertaken by SIPP-YTL JV, received the Best Project Award in the Infrastructure — Major Category at the Malaysian Construction Industry Excellence Awards (MCIEA) 2026, organised by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Malaysia. Yeoh received the Outstanding Young Contractor Award at the same event, according to the company’s statement.

The two MCIEA awards follow YTL Construction’s recent recognition as Construction Company of the Year (Transport Infrastructure) at the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Malaysia Building Excellence Awards 2026.

Spanning 192km and comprising 11 stations, the Gemas–Johor Bahru project completes the final link in Malaysia’s electrified double-track railway network between Padang Besar and Johor Bahru, the company said. It said the project enables Electric Train Service (ETS) journeys between Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru in approximately four hours and 20 minutes.

The company said construction involved civil and structural engineering works, trackworks and railway systems, undertaken alongside an operational railway while maintaining passenger and freight services. YTL Construction said the project recorded 28 million safe working hours and used Building Information Modelling (BIM), drones and LiDAR technology in construction planning and execution.

It said more than 3,000 Malaysian engineers and technical specialists contributed to the project, which supported over 35,000 employment opportunities throughout construction. The workforce peaked at nearly 10,000. Yeoh said the project demonstrated the ability of Malaysian engineers and technical professionals to deliver complex infrastructure. He attributed the awards to the workforce’s collective efforts and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to developing local talent and adopting new technologies.
