Tropicana contributes RM3m to Johor education fund
Tropicana Corporation Bhd has donated RM3 million to the Johor Education Foundation to support education and talent-development programmes in the state. The contribution backs initiatives including STEM-focused schools, scholarships for top SPM scorers, and technical facility upgrades.
PETALING JAYA (Sept 18): Tropicana Corporation Bhd has contributed RM3 million to Tabung Kebajikan & Pelajaran YPJ under the Johor Education Foundation to support education and talent-development initiatives in the state.
Tropicana said in a statement on Monday (Sept 14) that the contribution would support programmes aimed at widening educational opportunities for Johorean students and preparing them for changing academic and industry needs.
Among the initiatives supported is Sekolah Rintis Bangsa Johor, a pilot education model focusing on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), as well as English-language proficiency. The contribution will also support initiatives under Kumpulan Pendidikan Yayasan Pelajaran Johor and the Johor State Education Plan to strengthen talent development, modernise technical facilities and develop skills institutions.
Tropicana said the contribution also supports education assistance for students from lower-income households, including the Biasiswa Orang Muda Johor for top Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia scorers, Insentif Mahasiswa Anak Johor, Skim Bantuan Pendaftaran and Bantuan Laptop Siswa.
The group also contributed RM2,000 towards Malaysia's participation in the World Masters Hockey Cup 2026 as part of its corporate donation and corporate social responsibility efforts. The tournament, held in the Netherlands and Belgium from July 22 to Aug 16, featured Malaysian veteran players in the men's 40s, 45s, 50s, 55s, 60s and 65s categories. Malaysia participated under the patronage of Persatuan Hoki Veteran Sultan Ahmad Shah, which Tropicana described as the governing body for veteran hockey in Malaysia and as being officially recognised by the Malaysian Hockey Confederation.
Tropicana has also introduced an enhanced waste-separation system at the Tropicana Golf & Country Resort (TGCR) Clubhouse aimed at improving waste segregation and recycling at source. In FY2025, 201.4 tonnes, or 93.3%, of recorded clubhouse waste was sent to landfill, while 14.5 tonnes, or 6.7%, was recycled. The system separates recyclable materials from residual waste, with paper, cardboard, plastic, aluminium, tin and metal collected for recycling. Users are also encouraged to empty, rinse, wipe and drain recyclable items before disposal to minimise contamination and improve the quality of recyclable materials collected.
Tropicana said the initiative is intended to progressively divert suitable waste generated by the golf club and its tenants from landfill towards recovery and recycling. The group said TGCR's waste-management practices prioritise prevention and reduction, followed by reuse and recycling, treatment and, as a last resort, disposal. It added that the initiative forms part of efforts to reduce annual waste generation and, ultimately, Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions. Tropicana also said it maintained a four-star ESG rating under the FTSE ESG assessment with Bursa Malaysia for two consecutive years, in 2025 and 2026.
