PETALING JAYA (Oct 20): The Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT), through its agency Urbanice Malaysia, will provide RM24,000 in grants for three community-led pilot projects aimed at improving urban liveability, accessibility and public amenities.

The projects were selected under the Malaysia Urban Forum 2026 (MUF2026) Future City Pilot Project Grant Initiative. Implementation is expected between November 2026 and April 2027, subject to the relevant evaluation and approval processes.

In a statement dated Monday (Oct 19), KPKT said the Malaysian Association for the Blind had been selected for a grant of up to RM10,000 for accessibility audit training for people with visual disabilities. The Malaysian Institute of Planners Youth Wing and Placemaking Malaysia were selected for a grant of up to RM10,000 for the “Ruang Ketiga Untuk Belia Tanjung Malim” project. The 07 Titiwangsa Sea Scouts Group was selected for a grant of up to RM4,000 for a shaded pedestrian walkway shelter.

The initiative aims to turn community proposals into practical projects addressing local needs, including better urban environments and public amenities, environmental sustainability and residents’ well-being.

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, who officiated the eighth edition of MUF2026 Accelerator at Dewan Seri Seroja in Putrajaya on Oct 19, said Malaysia’s rapid urbanisation required more comprehensive urban planning and management. “Currently, approximately 76% of Malaysians live in urban areas, and the urbanisation rate is projected to reach 85% by 2040,” he said. Nga said physical development must be accompanied by quality infrastructure, safe environments, suitable public amenities and improvements in living standards.

KPKT said it had provided 122 community spaces in People’s Housing Project (PPR) areas through Urbanice Malaysia for residents’ activities, including reading corners for children. The ministry aims to provide community spaces in every PPR area to improve access to facilities for reading, learning and social interaction.

Themed “The Future Cities We Want to Live In”, MUF2026 Accelerator brings together stakeholders to develop solutions to urbanisation challenges. This year’s forum involves five groups: women, youth, academics, grassroots communities and children. Its targeted outcomes include a MUF2026 Call to Action, the identification of high-impact pilot projects, stronger strategic partnerships, clear implementation plans and monitoring mechanisms to assess the initiatives’ effectiveness and potential for expansion.

Nga said the forum’s success should be measured by how far its ideas translated into action and meaningful change, rather than the number of sessions held or resolutions produced. According to KPKT, the forum aligns with the Fifth National Physical Plan (RFN5) and the Third National Urbanisation Policy (DPN3), approved at the 51st National Physical Planning Council meeting on Oct 12.

Urbanice Malaysia will facilitate, coordinate and monitor the pilot projects with stakeholders to support effective implementation and potential expansion to other urban areas. The forum’s strategic partners include Perbadanan Putrajaya and Airbnb, with participation from government agencies, local authorities, the private sector, academic institutions and community representatives.
