PETALING JAYA (Oct 6): IJM Corporation Bhd has appointed former KPMG Malaysia managing partner Datuk Johan Idris as its independent non-executive chairman, effective Monday, Oct 5. The change follows the retirement of former chairman Tan Sri Krishnan Tan at the conclusion of the construction and property conglomerate’s annual general meeting (AGM) on Aug 27.

Datuk Lee Teck Yuen had stepped in as interim chairman at the AGM while the board finalised its succession plan. Following Johan’s appointment, Teck Yuen has been redesignated as a non-independent non-executive director with effect from the same date.

In Bursa Malaysia filings on Monday, IJM said Johan, 60, has more than 34 years of experience in finance, audit and strategic advisory. He was KPMG Malaysia’s managing partner and country senior partner from January 2014 to December 2024, after serving as its head of audit from 2011 to 2013 and an audit partner from 2002 to 2010. He is currently non-executive chairman of KPMG Malaysia, chairman of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and a board member and audit committee chairman of the Securities Commission Malaysia’s Capital Market Compensation Fund Corporation.

Johan is also an independent non-executive chairman of Maxis Bhd and an independent non-executive director of KLCC Property Holdings Bhd and KLCC Real Estate Investment Trust. His previous roles include serving on the KPMG Global Council and Asia-Pacific board, and as an executive member of Bank Negara Malaysia’s Financial Stability Executive Committee from 2016 to 2018. He was president of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants from 2013 to 2015.

In an accompanying statement, Johan said: “I look forward to working with my fellow board members and management to uphold strong governance and oversight as the group executes its priorities and creates long-term value for its stakeholders.” IJM group CEO and managing director Datuk Lee Chun Fai said Johan’s experience in corporate leadership, governance and financial oversight would bring valuable perspectives to the board. He also thanked Teck Yuen for taking on the chairmanship during the transition and continuing to serve on the board.

Teck Yuen, 70, joined IJM’s board in May 2007 and has more than 40 years of experience in the local and international property industry. He directly holds 11.76 million IJM shares, according to the filing. IJM also disclosed interests arising from Johan’s common directorships. Its 60%-owned subsidiary Globalcomm Solutions Sdn Bhd and that company’s subsidiary have ongoing business collaborations with Maxis Broadband Sdn Bhd involving connectivity services, telecommunications infrastructure leasing and wholesale internet bandwidth procurement. IJM said Johan’s interest in these arrangements is limited to his common directorship.

The group also said the activities of KLCC Property Holdings and KLCC REIT may be regarded as competing with its property division. Johan’s interest in this matter is likewise limited to his common directorships. Johan has no family relationship with any IJM director or major shareholder and holds no securities in IJM or its subsidiaries.
