Berjaya Construction, a unit of Berjaya Property linked to tycoon Vincent Tan, has been appointed for design-and-build works on the RM1.2 billion Sanglang Port project in Perlis. The development will include two multi-user terminals, a RORO terminal and a general cargo terminal along a 4km trestle.
Berjaya Construction has been appointed to handle design-and-build works for the Sanglang Port project in Perlis, parent company Berjaya Property said in a Wednesday bourse filing cited by national news agency Bernama. The scope covers procurement, design development, engineering and construction for the proposed port infrastructure.
Berjaya Construction will work with owner-developer Sanglang Port Mutiara Perlis, drawing on its technical expertise and project delivery experience. The proposed development will feature two multi-user terminals, a roll-on/roll-off (RORO) terminal and a general cargo terminal, along a 4km trestle with water depths of up to 11.9 metres.
Development will proceed in stages and is estimated to cost a total of RM1.2 billion, including RM675 million in initial estimated construction costs. Berjaya Property shares traded flat at RM0.25 on Wednesday, valuing the firm at RM1.25 billion, The Edge Malaysia reported.
Berjaya Construction is a unit of Berjaya Property, the property business of diversified conglomerate Berjaya Corporation, according to the company website. Vincent Tan, who founded Berjaya Corp, said the port project highlights the importance of investing in strategic infrastructure to support Malaysia's long-term economic growth and improve regional connectivity.
“We believe that well-planned maritime facilities can unlock new opportunities for trade, industry and investment, while supporting local businesses and communities,” he said in the filing. Tan is one of the country's richest people, ranking 29th on Forbes' Malaysia rich list in April with an estimated net worth of US$940 million.
Berjaya's interests span property, retail, financial services and gaming, and also include Malaysia's second 5G network operator U Mobile and telecommunications firm REDtone Digital.
