Aboitiz Group invests in AI and cybersecurity skills training for workforce

Aboitiz Group is expanding workforce training in artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, and other emerging technologies as it increases the use of data and digital tools across its businesses, the company said in a statement on Wednesday.

The group is investing in skills development as technology takes on a larger role in its operations and decision-making. Aboitiz Data Innovation works with the group’s business units to apply data and AI tools, while the company is also developing capabilities in cybersecurity and other emerging technologies.

Aboitiz Group President and Chief Executive Officer Sabin M. Aboitiz said the changing workplace is increasing the importance of judgment, adaptability, and leadership alongside technical skills. “AI can give you an answer in seconds, but it cannot decide what kind of person you want to be. That part is still up to you,” he said during a gathering of Aboitiz Future Leaders scholars. He said technology will continue to improve, while judgment, curiosity, character, creativity, empathy, and leadership will remain important as AI advances.

The group’s talent-development initiatives also include a US$10-million commitment to the Asian Institute of Management that helped establish the Aboitiz School of Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship. The school focuses on data science, technology, and entrepreneurship. According to Aboitiz, the endowment has supported 290 students pursuing graduate studies in data science, with more than 160 graduates to date.

The Aboitiz Foundation also runs the Aboitiz Future Leaders scholarship programme, which provides financial assistance and leadership-development opportunities. The foundation welcomed 11 new scholars this year and conducted sessions on mental health and financial literacy. According to the company, more than 1,200 scholars have benefited from the programme nationwide, with nearly 300 currently supported by the foundation.
