YTL Power International, part of Malaysian conglomerate YTL Corp., is expanding its digital infrastructure with a new 1.2-gigawatt data centre campus at Sedenak Tech Park in Johor, southern Malaysia, the company said on Wednesday. The project, backed by AI chipmaker Nvidia, will be developed by YTL Power subsidiary SIPP Power.
SIPP Power has agreed to buy 59 hectares of land within Sedenak Tech Park West from state-owned JLand Group, with an option to acquire another 162 hectares for future expansion, potentially bringing the campus’ total footprint to 221 hectares. Analysts estimate the Sedenak campus could require investments of at least US$10 billion to complete, though YTL Power did not disclose the value of the project.
In Kulai, about 28 kilometres southeast of Sedenak, YTL Power said it has completed 300 megawatts of data centre capacity at its YTL Green Data Center Park in partnership with Nvidia, with another 200 megawatts expected to become operational by the first quarter of 2027. The Sedenak campus will reach its total capacity of 1.2 gigawatts by 2032.
“The establishment of a new gigawatt-scale campus at Sedenak represents an important expansion of YTL Power’s digital infrastructure platform in Johor and across the region,” said Yeoh Seok Hong, managing director of YTL Power International. “Together with our expanding Kulai campus, Sedenak will further strengthen Johor’s position as a leading regional centre for artificial intelligence, cloud computing and digital innovation.”
Malaysia has become a major digital infrastructure hub since Singapore imposed restrictions on new data centre projects. Global players such as Australian billionaire Robin Khuda’s AirTrunk are also expanding in the country, with the company recently earmarking US$3 billion to build two data centres with a combined capacity of 280 megawatts, according to Reuters.
YTL Corp., founded by Francis Yeoh’s late father Yeoh Tiong Lay more than six decades ago, has interests in cement, utilities, properties and hotels. Francis Yeoh, with a net worth of US$4.1 billion, helms the family’s global business empire as chairman.
